Joe was born in Imperia, Italy. He graduated from St. Anthony School, Dowling Catholic, Grand View College and Drake University. Following Drake, Joe spent four years in The United States Coast Guard. While in the Coast Guard, Joe met the love of his life, Audry. Joe and Audry moved back to Des Moines where Joe began working for the Black and Decker. He worked there for the past 36 years.
Joe enjoyed many things during his life, but the most joy was spending time with and spoiling his grandchildren, who knew him as "Pop Pop". Whether it was going to a sporting event or to school plays, his grandchildren, children, and wife were the most important thing to him in the whole world. He coached baseball, football and basketball for many years for his own children. He served on the Board of Directors at South Des Moines Little League. Joe enjoyed fishing trips with family members and friends. He especially loved to brag about catching the biggest fish. He loved spending his free time helping his children do odds and ends around the house, gardening, and helping out around the church. Joe was well known as the "Pasta King" to all of his nieces and nephews for making huge pots of pasta for graduation parties and wedding receptions.
Joe was a member of The Knights of Columbus and The American Legion- Cummings Chapter.
Joe was preceded in death by his father, Arthur M. Scigliano; mother, Josephine Scigliano; his father-in-law, Gerald Kies; and by his cousin, John Scigliano.
Joe is survived by his wife of 37 years, Audry; his sons, Dan (Jill), Mark (Shari), Rob (Melissa) of Des Moines, Tony (Theresa) of Virginia Beach; his daughter, Betsy (Matt Pyfferoen) of Iowa City; his grandchildren, Nico, Noah, Marguerite, Luca, James, Geoffrey, Josephine, Joey; and by his brother, Frank, of California.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to St. Anthony School Air Conditioning fund, St. Anthony Latchkey, or Hospice of Central Iowa in his name.

Joe Scigliano - Feb 20, 2007
Joe passed away this morning at home. He was comfortable, peaceful and was surrounded by many who love him. We are still determining arrangements. At this time we plan to have the funeral at St Anthony's on Monday at 10am. Visitation will be at Brooks funeral home Sunday...time yet to be determined. Thank you to everyone who has prayed and has been there for both Joe and the family over the last year and half of his illness.
God Bless.

Update on Joe Feb 14
Joe has been in the hospital for over 4 weeks battling a number of issues. He came into the hospital with a virus which turned into pneumonia. He was also having intense pain in his stomach. After several weeks we determined that he had an infection and stones in the gallbladder which was caused from his inability to eat. When the body goes into a starvation mode (as his was for not eating for several weeks), the liver funnels all the bile into the gallbladder rather than releasing it into the stomach for digestion. This caused the build-up of stones (which weren't there when he came in) and then an infection. He has continually ran a fever, had bouts of high and low blood pressure and continued pain. They drained the gallbladder and continue to do so. The bile is now it's normal color indicating no infection, but since he's not eating and is back on TPN, they continue to drain it. In addition this week he started to retain fluid in the abdomen and they drained over 3 L of fluid in one day. After a series of tests the Drs have concluded that it is likely the cancer has moved to the lining (outside) of the stomach and it is the cancer cells that are causing the build-up of fluid. They have cultured samples but they are inconclusive thus far, which may be due to the antibiotics. At this point the Drs do not know if there is much they can do. Joe is coming home today with in-home hospice care and we will see if he gets stronger or not...
Many have asked what they can do. For now we ask that you pray for Joe and for the family.
God bless.
